BEYOND "THE WATER SPOUT"[ Home | Contents | Search | Post | Reply | Next | Previous | Up ] Re: Koi - Male or FemaleCategory: Fish & Fish Diseases CommentsCall Mike Christensen at Ornamental Pond Fish at 343-4002 for more details. Sometimes you can tell by shape, the females are more rounded (and during spawning, they "swell up" with eggs)and the males are more streamlined and thinner. A more sure way is to catch them during the spawning season and squeeze them. The female will discharge eggs while the males discharge sperm. This can be dangerous to your fish if you don't know how to do this properly though. Some times it is safer to anesthetize the fish first. Anesthesia can also be dangerous if you over anesthetize them. Small Koi are very hard to tell. Mickey Christensen Ornamental Pond Fish Last changed: June 21, 2007 |
