Deep South Koi & Pond Society

Annual Pond Tours

In September, 1994, the Society sponsored its first annual Tour of Ponds as a fund raising activity to benefit the Council on Aging. The Tour was very successful and netted $1,000 for the COA. In 1995, a jazz concert was held in conjunction with the Tour, and $2,000 were donated to the COA. Donations for the years 1996, 1997, were $1,000 and $4,000 respectively, doubling the three previous years. In both 1998 and 1999 the donated amount was $3,000, while the 2000 amount was $500, making a total of $14,500 donated to the COA over a period of seven years. Affiliation with the COA ended in 2000, when that agency was reorganized and chose to no longer sponsor the Society. Consequently, the recipient of the proceeds of the 2001 Tour was Volunteers in Public Schools, to which $1,000 were donated in December, 2001.

Over the years the Tour has featured four to eight ponds. Guests may visit them in any order they wish and stay as long as they wish within the specified time frame. Society members sell and collect tickets and act as hosts.

In 2003, for the first time in its history, the Capital Area Pond & Water Gardening Society will hold it's Tenth Annual Tour of Ponds "Moonlight on the Water" in the late evening.  Participants will have an opportunity to see how ponds and water gardens can be enjoyed late in the day and evening. The tour will be Sunday, October 12,  from 4:00 - 9:00 pm.  All sites are well lighted for easy touring. This Event will benefit the Society's scholarship fund for students of aquaculture, horticulture, and related fields.

There will be two ponds in Zachary that are in the same block; two in Baker that are next door to each other and four in south Baton Rouge, one of which was featured this month in The Advocate, you can view the article by clicking here http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/100603/peo_pond001.shtml#.  Advance tickets are $10 or $8 for senior adults over age 65 and students and may be purchased in advance at the following locations:  Baton Rouge locations of Clegg's Nurseries; Greco's Pet Supplies; Harb's Oasis, JimStone, Co.; Naylor’s Hardware and Garden Center; and Tony Jr's Pet Shop. Also in Denham Springs at Clegg's Nursery; Whistle Stop Gourmet Coffee Shop, in Lafayette at JimStone, Co., in Zachary at God’s Garden Helper and in Baker at Rose’s Florist & Gifts.

Ticket price includes admission to the Tour of Ponds and a raffle for a handmade cypress glider donated by James Carter of “Just-A-Swinging”, and door prizes. Tickets may also be purchased on tour day at the pond tour sites for $12.50 or $10 for senior adults over age 65 and students.
